Wellspring Ministries Understands the Situation
Counseling is simply helping others during the times of their lives that have become
difficult. We are all at different times in our lives and we need others to help
us through these times.
Too often, professional help is just for those who can afford it, so we want to offer low or now cost services to people seeking therapy.
By using counselors-in-training who work under the supervision of licensed counselors, we can keep costs down and offer a means for a CIT to accumulate the 3000 hours necessary for licensure.
In offering this opportunity for a CIT to earn state licensure, we will address another problem with our mental health system, and that is a significant shortage of qualified mental health personnel.
Needs Statement
Mental
illness is a common phenomenon in the community, occurring at a much higher incidence
than most people believe or accept. Mental illness is the number one cause of disability,
and yet mental health services are difficult to access. Our social ignorance about
mental illness is a principle barrier. For example, many people recognize depression
as a mental illness, but they do not realize, for example, that suicide is the third
leading cause of death among high school students and the second leading cause of
death among college students. Two-thirds of all mentally ill never seek treatment
due to lack of insurance, lack of education about mental illness, and the stigma
of diagnosis and treatment. Untreated mental illness is costly to employers, to
the community, and to families. Wellspring creates increased availability of mental
health care in the community as well as accessible mental health care for the uninsured
and underinsured.
